Eligibility for Funded Solar Infrastructure
Funding routes are available for small and large scale residential portfolios through council-backed schemes. Specific eligibility is subject to technical survey and local authority approval.
Private Landlords
Landlords can remove the requirement for significant capital outlays by installing funded solar panels and a battery, to accelerate the decarbonisation of their properties.
Local Authorities
Councils looking to upgrade their housing stock can take advantage of a fully-funded solution designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of local authority properties by installing funded solar panels and battery storage.
Housing Associations
Housing associations may be eligible for fully-funded solar panels and battery storage solution designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of housing stock properties.
How The Funding Works
A comprehensive, fully funded solution to accelerate the decarbonisation of social housing and local authority properties through a managed service model. The proposition provides solar photovoltaic panels and battery storage, delivering clear financial, environmental, and operational benefits for landlords, residents, and the wider community.
Under the model, SMS designs, installs, operates, maintains, and continually optimises the assets. SMS provides the upfront capital funding, covering procurement, deployment, maintenance, replacements, and upgrades. This removes the need for landlords to make significant capital investments or manage complex asset ownership responsibilities.
Participating Social Housing Landlords and Local Authorities enter into a long-term managed service agreement, typically over 25 years, and pay a clearly defined service subscription fee. Throughout the contract, SMS retains ownership and full responsibility for asset performance, compliance, maintenance, and lifecycle management.
Residents benefit from reduced energy costs through optimised onsite renewable generation and battery storage, lowering reliance on grid electricity and helping protect households from future energy price volatility.
The solution also supports landlords in meeting key sustainability targets, including EPC C requirements, while contributing to wider government and sector decarbonisation objectives.
Battery storage enables participation in flexibility markets, creating additional revenue opportunities that can be shared with landlords. This revenue can also help offset arrears risk where landlords seek to recover some or all of the resident subscription fee, supporting budget certainty and reducing consumer debt exposure.
In summary, the proposition offers a turnkey pathway for social housing providers to deliver low-carbon, future-ready homes at scale, with minimal financial risk and strong operational assurance.
Combined with SMS’s expertise and funding capability, the model enables landlords to unlock long-term value for residents, communities, and their wider environmental strategies.
Key Points
Solar PV and battery systems are designed, installed, operated, maintained, and optimised by SMS.
SMS provides full capital funding for all associated costs.
Social Housing Landlords ("SHLs") and Local Authorities ("LAs") pay a defined service subscription fee over a 20–25 year term.
Residents benefit from reduced energy costs and greater protection from energy price volatility.
Throughout the term of the services agreement, SMS retains ownership, responsibility, and control of the LC Assets, including planned replacements and upgrades.
Residents retain complete freedom of choice regarding their energy supplier.
SMS provides a switching engine that identifies the most cost-effective tariff for each resident, helping to maximise potential savings.
Where circumstances such as energy debt prevent switching, SMS supports residents in securing the best available tariff from their existing supplier.
The proposition supports the decarbonisation of housing stock and assists landlords in achieving key objectives, including EPC C standards.
The model delivers reduced electricity costs for residents, improved energy efficiency, and significant environmental benefits.
Each installation is bespoke and site-specific, designed in accordance with applicable technical standards and MCS accreditation requirements.
